Lidar Finds Lost Silk Road Cities

Lost Silk Road Cities

Discoveries of Lost Silk Road Cities

Archaeologists have discovered two medieval cities, Tashbulak and Tugunbulak, in Uzbekistan's mountains using lidar technology. Thriving between the 6th and 11th centuries, these urban centers challenge the notion that trade routes avoided high altitudes.

Tugunbulak features over 300 structures, including fortifications, while Tashbulak spans 12 hectares. The cities likely engaged in iron production, contributing to their economies. However, environmental degradation may have led to their decline by the 11th century, prompting further investigation into their abandonment and historical significance along the Silk Road.
